Day 7 on the Nancy Zieman Tablet Keeper Tour

E-readers, tablets and iPads have changed the way we digest information. They are quite portable and can get caught in the mix when travelling or attending meetings so make yours stand out. Nancy Zieman thought of everything when she designed the E-Tablet & Paper Tablet Keeper template by Clover. Really – everything. Why? Nancy will tell you (okay, I didn’t ask her but I’m pretty sure she would agree) the devil is in the details. And ‘homemade’ is definitely in the details. What makes one project look like it was thrown together and another to have been created over days and weeks? The details – the binding, the trim accents, the feel of the fabric and the fit. If you nail the details, then you’ll be pleased with the outcome.

Nancy has addressed all the details with helpful products that make the finished project look very professional.

First, there’s the E-Tablet & Paper Tablet Keeper template. A 3-in-1 pattern (that will probably outlast your tablet) for small, medium and large readers includes markings for a tab closure, magnet, center accent, pockets and the like. No guesswork here, just mark your fabric and cut.

Second, Clover’s Pre-cut Tablet Keeper Shapers. Oh my, slip this sturdy material into the keeper and voila! Your keeper is stiff as a board.

Third, Create-a-Strap fusible interfacing with precut folds. If you struggle with cutting and pressing strips into perfect rectangles, then this product is for you. Every time I use it, I’m so darn impressed with my results, I can’t help but grin. Nancy’s products make me look brilliant!

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

With these tools in hand, I couldn’t wait to get started. Since I’m a machine embroiderer, I wanted to embellish the outside cover. I played around with fonts in digitizing software and created this fun design. Then, I selected a faux suede fabric and hooped it in Magna-Hoop Jumbo to avoid hoop burn.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

After the embroidery was complete, I simply followed Nancy’s instructions and completed the Keeper in about an hour.

I used elastic hair bands at the corners to hold my Kindle in place – per Nancy’s suggestion. I just tacked them on the corners (I followed the markings on the Tablet Keeper Template for placement).

The ends get hidden under the inner spine and later, the binding.

Wow – it was way easier than I thought it would be!

Love the embroidery design? I made it just for you!  Download the free 5” x 7” embroidery design by clicking here. You’ll find two versions – a youthful multi-color version and a more sophisticated two-color design.

Here’s your assignment this week:

So tell me, would you use the Table Keeper for a Kindle, Nook, iPad or traditional paper notebook? Leave your comment and you’ll be in the running to win a PAL – Perfect Alignment Laser. Don’t know what that is? Click here to read more about it.

Love the embroidery design? I made it for you – click here to download the free 5” x 7” embroidery design. You’ll find two versions – a youthful multi-color version and a more sophisticated two-color design.

The winner of last week’s assignment answered the following question:

Tell us what embroidery/sewing/crafting tasks you would use the PAL for and you could win a $25 shopping spree on the Designs in Machine Embroidery website.

The winner is:  Carol Morrow!
Her comment below was randomly drawn:
“This looks like a terrific tool.  I would use it to align logos on shirts etc.  It’s always hard to get them aligned straight.” – Carol Morrow

Congratulations Carol!

  32. Jo of So TX on January 11, 2012 at 3:17 pm

since I am digitly challenged, I’ll probably use it for paper and pen. totally love it and looks like somehting even I can do. ;) If I ever get the chance though I really want a Kindle to read my books from. that would be really great. thanks for project and of course free design.

  38. Beth on January 11, 2012 at 4:57 pm

I don’t have a tablet – yet! – so I would use it for paper. I do carry a legal pad around all day at work, for notes, so that would be perfect!

  39. Kathy Hulsmann on January 11, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Love the idea about the elastic hair bands and they come in great colors!

  40. Miriam Landers on January 11, 2012 at 5:25 pm

I would not only use the cover for my own e-reader, I would make them for gifts to my friends and family that have tablets and/or e-readers. Thanks a million for the great designs.

  41. Kay on January 11, 2012 at 5:38 pm

I made a Kindle Keeper as a Christmas gift for my mom, and now my dad wants a Tablet Cover for his iPad! I’ve had so much fun picking fabrics and designs to put on both of their projects! It makes me feel so happy to know that I’m giving them something that they will enjoy using!

  42. Nancy in IN on January 11, 2012 at 5:43 pm

I will make a cover for a note book for me and for the Kindle fire for grand. I’m sure my DDL will want one for her Ipad.

  45. MarciaW on January 11, 2012 at 6:31 pm

Traditional Paper Notebook – though if won a Kindle reader or iPad would give them a cover too! As a newbie with machine embroidery, I have trouble in alignment of designs. The PAL sounds very interesting. My late father used laser’s for aligning his woodturning pieces so think this is Kool idea. Thanks for the informative post!

  46. Judy david on January 11, 2012 at 6:50 pm

Love everything about this one. I can’t wait to see the rest of them!

  47. BetsyC on January 11, 2012 at 6:59 pm

Absolutely LOVE your embroidery design. I created a cover for my iPad, but didn’t know about Nancy’s templates or the Clover tablet shapers. Am definitely going to try to “remake” my cover so it’s top-notch, just like all the tablets featured in the blog tour!

  48. Sherrie Lilly on January 11, 2012 at 6:59 pm

I have a Toshiba Tablet which is a little different in size but I bbought the templetes and I will just adjust for the size of my tablet. Yes I will make a tablet cover. Thanks for the templates, patterns and designs. You gals are great.

I wiill use it on my Nook

  51. Pam on January 11, 2012 at 7:55 pm

As the fortunate owner of 2 Kindles and an Ipad, I would make matching “outfits” for all of my readers, as well as a cover for the notebook which I use for my machine embroidery notes. This looks like a great project and I can’t wait to try it!

  52. deanna briggs on January 11, 2012 at 7:58 pm

I love the wording in your design–this is truly an inspiration. I am going to try and make this into a cover for paper because I do not have a kindle. or make it for a gift for a person that does.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

I would use it for my iPad and have some suede like fabric to use for it!

  69. Elizabeth Colledge on January 11, 2012 at 11:53 pm

I would use it for all the iPads in my life. There are a few family and friends who have an iPad and we always pick up each others ipad by mistake. It’s funny to watch as we all pick up an ipad that we think belongs to us, but when we double check to make sure, realise it’s not and then the guessing game begins.

  70. Sharon Aiken on January 12, 2012 at 12:01 am

I would use it for the Ipad I got for Christmas.

  71. Jean Guenther on January 12, 2012 at 6:01 am

I would definately use it for the Ipad to show off the things I love. Sewing, embroidery and Ipad! Pre Ipad I made a steno notebook cover that I dragged with me for years. This is great for the electronic age.

  72. Jean on January 12, 2012 at 6:24 am

I would use it for the iPad. Thanks for the free design download.

  73. Dale Fedor on January 12, 2012 at 6:36 am

I’d use it to make e-reader covers. My grandkids each have one (DIL says that way she is not hunting for library books that somehow get hidden in the house). If I make them of different colors/material, they can see whose is whose. Thank you for the download Eileen.

  74. Beth R on January 12, 2012 at 6:43 am

I would use at tablet keeper for my Motorola Xoom. Perfect for keeping the tablet handy while I use it!

I would make a cover for my daughter’s Kindle. It would be used all the time.

  76. Nancy Zieman on January 12, 2012 at 7:25 am

  77. Barbara on January 12, 2012 at 7:38 am

  78. Carol Morrow on January 12, 2012 at 7:45 am

I will be making one for my daughter in law who has 2 Kindles. The project looks so inviting and I love the design.

  79. Joan Davidson on January 12, 2012 at 7:47 am

You two have outdone yourselves AGAIN! I would use the template to make one for my e-reader and one for notepaper. Both would be of great use to me.

  80. Joan Davidson on January 12, 2012 at 7:48 am

You two have outdone yourselves once again. I would use the template for my e-reader and for notepaper. Both would be of great benefit to me. And, think of the gifts! Wow.

  81. Clem on January 12, 2012 at 8:13 am

I love this design. I am in the process of moving. We are in the house, but our stuff is not…I am saving my pennies, nickles, dimes to purchase the templates. My daughter and granddaughter both have nooks (as do I ;) ). I would make a cover for all of us.

    thanks for the wonderful designs.

  82. Lyn Blansett on January 12, 2012 at 8:20 am

I plan to make a cover for my Kindle Fire, which was a surprise birthday gift from my husband! I will probably be making more for my daughter and daughter-in-law. Thanks for the wonderful designs and all the ideas!

  83. Laura Sexton on January 12, 2012 at 8:25 am

I’m very excited about the e-tablet/paper keepers. Don’t you just hate it when your paper gets all wrinkled in your tote! And my iPad cover is boring: can’t wait for my templates to arrive.

  84. Tina on January 12, 2012 at 8:27 am

I would use the tablet keeper for a Kindle I got for Christmas and I love the embroidery design you used.

I would like to make a cover for my new Kindle Fire. Thank for the embroidery download. I love the covers with embroidery on them and such a fun inspirational message.

  89. Jody Burks on January 12, 2012 at 10:11 am

I would use it for IPad, Kindle and covered paper notepads. I think a covered notepads would make a nice “I was thinking of you” gift.

  90. Marsha Nelson on January 12, 2012 at 10:33 am

I need a cover for my Nook and am excited to make one. I think my granddaughters would love the notepads. The cover you made is darling with all the words of wisdom.

I’m still using “paper tablets”. I bring one to all my sewing classes so this is definitely on my to-do list.

  92. Desiree Kumpf on January 12, 2012 at 11:05 am

This was great timing. I bought myself a Nook for Christmas and have been trying to decide how to make a cover. And then of course it has to be embroidered, so I’ve been agonizing over what design to use. I love this one! Now I have to dig through my fabric stash.

  93. Stella on January 12, 2012 at 11:09 am

This is perfect…I was looking for a pattern to make an I-pad cover for my daughter. Now I don’t have to invent the wheel. The embroidery design is great.

  94. Nancy Owens on January 12, 2012 at 12:32 pm

What a great set of products, I would use the template to make a cover for my Police office husband. I would use my embroidery machine to do some sort of great police related embroidery. Maybe a police car with red lights, he does love his job!

  95. Linda Corbin on January 12, 2012 at 1:56 pm

I had already ordered Nancy’s templates because I had been trying to make a cover for a friend’s Kindle for several years and this looked so much better than my designs. Then my sweet husband got me a Kindle for Christmas/Birthday (Christmas eve)so now I’m really anxious to make some. Now you show me the great embroidery design to go on the front – WOW. Sew much fun! Whoever came up with this daily blog idea should get a bonus!

  96. Anne Marie Reilly on January 12, 2012 at 3:28 pm

I would use it to make a cover for my Nook but I think it would be useful to make covers for journals and similar size books to give as gifts.

  97. Cathy Chalk on January 12, 2012 at 3:37 pm

Eileen, this is great for my Kindle. I am going to replace on of your insprirational words with my name to “make it mine”! Love it, love it. You keep me inspired!!

  98. Elaine Tabor on January 12, 2012 at 4:16 pm

I just received a Kindle for my birthday and this would be a great way to personalize it. Great idea!

  99. Carla on January 12, 2012 at 4:55 pm

I like the colors, thanks for the free patterns.

  100. Nancy Newman on January 12, 2012 at 5:27 pm

I would love to have the pattern to make a cover for my Kindle. I would also make one for note to take to quilt meetings. I’m sure some of my quilting friends would love it too. Thank you for the emb. design.

  101. Sharon on January 12, 2012 at 5:44 pm

I have a Nook Simple Touch e-Reader and can’t wait to get the creative juices flowing to stitch a cover for it. Thanks for the awesome embroidery design!

  102. Beth on January 12, 2012 at 6:03 pm

I would definitely use the Tablet Keeper!!! I would make one for two of my friends who have IPads and I would make one for myself for a tablet. I don’t have an e-reader…..yet! I LOVE the embroidery. Thank you for the free download!

thanks for the emb design. Plan to use it to make a bag for my Nook.

  104. Laurie Dacus on January 12, 2012 at 6:10 pm

Use this for? Gee, Kindles and iPads are the latest craze. I would use this template for gifts (and from that, maybe make some $$ selling some too). For me, it would be for a notebook, as I do not have the latest in techie gadgets, too much fun sewing and embroidering… and I saw the PAL demonstrated just this week, and would LOVE to have one. thanks

  105. Nancy on January 12, 2012 at 6:14 pm

very nice, can’t wait to make one myself

  106. Kathe on January 12, 2012 at 6:20 pm

I love your design on the cover. I’m hoping to be a recepient of an emboidery machine and I think one of my first items will be this project for paper pads – you know – old world stuff. Thanks.

  107. Mary on January 12, 2012 at 7:01 pm

I’ve got the template and the inserts. I’m making one for my Kindle Fire this weekend, and then a tablet keeper for work. I’ve been following the blog hop and am going to incorporate a couple of ideas in my Keeper. The Pen loop is a necessity for the tablet keeper.

  108. Cathie Paski on January 12, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Definitely want to make this tablet case. I just got a Toshiba thrive and this is perfect since I love to embroider too.

  109. Ann Acquilano on January 12, 2012 at 8:49 pm

I have a Nook, I received for Christmas last year. Although I have a cover. I would love a more personalized cover. Your design will give me the personally cover I haouve been looking for. Thank you. Nothing is more personal then some you have made yourself.

  110. Mary Haggenmaker on January 12, 2012 at 9:37 pm

  112. Stephanie on January 13, 2012 at 8:23 am

I have been following this Blog Tour and have to say, other then Nancy’s, I love your’s the most! Your instructions are clear and easy to follow. The detail pictures are great! The saying for the cover is fantastic!
I only have one problem. I wish the embroidery design was also available in 4″ x 4″. That is the biggest I can stitch out.
Thank you so much for sharing! :)

  113. Margie F. on January 13, 2012 at 10:40 am

I would make it for an iPad that I hope to get soon!!

  114. Pam Marshall on January 13, 2012 at 2:21 pm

  115. Patty Sack on January 13, 2012 at 4:40 pm

Oh those are great! I just ordered my new kindle today too! Can’t wait to make one!

  116. JUDY on January 13, 2012 at 5:13 pm

Thank you for the embroidered words for the cover. I just got my kindle, and will be anxious to make a cover. I would use the PAL for aligning applique and ITH projects, which are favs of mine.

  117. Favy on January 13, 2012 at 8:26 pm

I was thinking of making covers for the android e-readers i gave my children for Christmas gifts! I love the the sewing notion details you spoke about.

  119. Sylvia on January 14, 2012 at 10:58 am

Love the design, I have an iPad that will look wonderful in the case when I get it made. Think the PAL tool is a wonderful addition to the tools you have available. No more designs going up or downhill on my projects.

  122. Vicky Isliefson on January 14, 2012 at 3:52 pm

Too bad I already bought a pretty cool leather cover for my Kobo, but I could make a cover for my planner that I use to keep track of my students and classes.

  123. Jayne Shindel on January 14, 2012 at 8:51 pm

This is just the project I need. The first one will be for my Kindle Fire and the second will be for a notebook. May just start now for next Christmas presents.

  124. Karen O on January 15, 2012 at 9:31 am

I would use this to make a paper tablet keeper. Hopefully someday I will have a Kindle Fire or something like it, but meanwhile it would be a pretty tablet or maybe even a Journal keeper!

  125. Margaret Pepper on January 16, 2012 at 10:07 am

I have been looking for a pattern that I like for my Kindle. I believe I have found it! I would also use it for other members in my family who own nooks and ipads.

  126. Liz Fergus on January 16, 2012 at 3:03 pm

I will be making the covers. The patterns are on the way! I will make the paper tablet cover for myself as I don’t have the electronic items. But I will make the covers as gifts for those who do! And I would just love to win the PAL. Thank you for the cover design, which I will definitely be using….
    Liz

  131. Judith Carlon on January 17, 2012 at 6:56 pm

My daughter got a Kindle Fire for Christmas. She is an avid reader. I would love to make the Kindle keeper with this embroidery design on it.

  132. Staci Williams on January 17, 2012 at 8:12 pm

I would use it for the Kindle Fire I received at Christmas. I have been looking for the perfect cover and this looks like it.

  133. Dale on January 18, 2012 at 3:21 am

I would have to make it for a tablet. I’m old school until I buy one of these new fangled e-readers (or Hubby buys it). But the cover is so cute.

  134. Cheryl on January 18, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I love the embroidery. For me, I would use the pattern to make a paper pad. But then I would make an IPad cover for my grandmother and dad, and a kindle cover for my dad.

  135. Linda Mattson on January 18, 2012 at 7:26 pm

I would love to make a keeper for my e-reader. I have the template on my wish list. I enjoyed the choice of fabrics that you used for yours.

  136. Michele T on January 19, 2012 at 5:15 pm

I don’t have a Kindle yet but am hoping for one… at least I’m hinting my family to get me one!!

  137. Soph Hall on January 24, 2012 at 4:04 pm

I am usually skeptical of things that “are simpler than you think” –it’s not always simple. I have an e-reader, and many high school students will be using them more and more. In this world we don’t like to blend in–but show our independence. I like too, the old fashioned paper tablets. This is an ideal tool to get all you need and be creative. Thanks Nancy for dreaming it up, and Eileen for demonstrating how gorgeous it really is up close.

  138. Shirley in Canada on January 25, 2012 at 5:31 am

What a wonderful way to showcase your reader!! Thank you for such a great design! I think I will use it for both a reader and gifts with notepads for friends!

  139. Jan Chally on January 25, 2012 at 10:11 pm

I am planning on returning a cover I bought for Kindle Fire for over $40 and making my own. I am also a machine embroiderer and appreciate the embroidery design you created for this challenge and would love to win your prize.

I am going to make mine for my kindle. I cannot live without it. I think I will also make one for a paper note pad too. Thank you so very much for the embroidery design it will make my kindle keeper so unique. I like you idea of using the magna hoop when hopping the fabric. I plan to use syn. swede and that will help with the hooping lines. Thanks again for all your great ideas I draw a lot of inspiration from you and Nancy.

  142. Kathy on February 6, 2012 at 11:33 am

I am an equal opportunity e-reader! I already have a Kindle and Nook and plan to get an IPad soon. Also have at least 6 family members waiting in line for new covers.

Thanks for the designs and inspiration!

    Hi Melody,
You’re on the right page. If you begin from the top of the blog, scroll down until you see the embroidery design in white/blue and in multiple colors. You’ll see the following text: “Love the embroidery design? I made it just for you! Download the free 5” x 7” embroidery design by clicking here.”

    Best,
    Denise

I love the idea of being able to use the cover for a paper tablet. As a reading specialist, I have to go to a lot of meetings about students. I always use a note pad to write down my notes. This cover will look great at the meetings. Maybe someday I will be able to upgrade to an ipad.

  153. Hellen Berard on May 4, 2013 at 11:46 pm
