Great Grandma’s Linens

By Denise Holguin
Managing Editor

Where do you find inspiration?  Oftentimes it’s right under my nose—or in this example, in my kitchen drawer!

This flour sack towel was hand stitched by my great grandmother.  My mother gave it to me when I moved into my first home years ago.  The simplicity and the cheerful colors make the towel charming!

While it’s hand stitching, there are similar designs you can machine embroider.  Take a look at what I uncovered on the web.

This week’s assignment:

What an inspiring individual we have in this week’s winner!  Linda Turner took an idea (the “Read” bags featured in Volume 64 Sept/Oct 2010) then put the idea into action.  She inspired others to join in a unique endeavor to stitch hundreds of “Read” bags for a children’s reading program.

Share your stories of how you have put your sewing, machine embroidery or crafting skills into action for someone in need.  Post a comment for a chance to win a $25 shopping spree to the Designs in Machine Embroidery website.

The winner of last week’s assignment answered the following question:

It’s hard to believe we are 73 issues strong!  Every issue is near and dear to our hearts as if they were our own children.  Each project has special meaning and significance because they represent writers who love to create and design for you!  You, our readers also love to create, design and to be inspired.  When you look at it this way, machine embroidery isn’t such a solitary act!

Tell us what your favorite project is from any issue of Designs in Machine Embroidery.  One random comment will be the lucky winner of an autographed copy of Designer Handbags by Nancy Zieman and Eileen Roche.

 Designs in Machine Embroidery

We randomly selected the following winner…Linda Turner!
“My very favorite project would be “The READ” bag featured in the 2010 Fall issue of your magazine.  The first “READ” bag was made for a special young lady’s 4th birthday.  I filled her “READ” bag with books so she could read to her parents and her little brother.  She loved, loved, loved it!  In fact, her mother said she even slept with the bag! I am a retired teacher and I work part-time at Zede’s Sewing Studio in Columbia, Missouri.  Last spring, we decided to make “READ” bags for the children in the JUMPSTART Reading Program because the “READ” bag had been such a hit for my young friend. Customers and staff at Zede’s made about 250 “READ” bags. The bags were filled with books and given to students at the end of the school year. This year we talked about just buying a bag for the books and donating them to JUMPSTART for the students.  Mallory, store manager, met with the JUMPSTART personnel to discuss the project.  They loved the “READ” bags we had made so much that they almost begged for us to do the same thing again this year!  How could Mallory say no to that??  Once again, we(staff and customers of Zede’s) are making 250 “READ” bags for students in the JUMPSTART Program.  This has been such a neat project and it was all because I subscribed to such a fantastic magazine!  Thank you!” – Linda Turner

The Stitching Sisters are making their way across the US! Come join the fun!

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Eileen's Machine Embroidery BlogI can’t wait to meet you!

Have you been itching to ramp up your machine embroidery skills? A two-day event may be just the thing you need to breathe new life into your hobby. My Stitching Sister, Marie Zinno, and I travel the country to teach hands-on team embroidery classes which feature twelve hands-on projects that cover tons of techniques – everything from terrycloth to continuous machine embroidery. Take a look at what you can expect.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

We kickoff the event with a behind the scenes look at Designs followed by our Hooping Clinic. Marie and I hoop over 30 items in standard machine embroidery hoops, Magna-Hoops, Snap-Hoop and border hoops. We discuss why you select each hoop and what to do when you don’t have the ideal hoop. Attendees find this information priceless. One recent attendee in Puyallup, WA said, “I could walk out of here after this lecture and feel I got every penny worth of admission.” Here’s what some other attendees have had to say:

Eileen and Marie,
Thanks so much for coming to KC! LOVED the event and all your stories/energy. WOW! It was awesome to have 2 days to get to study under you and learn so much. LOVE the Stipple products and techniques. Looking forward to seeing you again!

Judy Brennan

Eileen and Marie,
We had so much fun in Atlanta. The information you gave and taught us was immeasurable. You two are definitely gifted in your talent and love for the embroidery industry.
Best blessings in everything you done.
Signed Had fun in Atlanta,

Jackie Wallace

Hey Everyone! I’d highly recommend going to the Sewing Sisters Event if you get the chance. I live in Oregon and I went to Puyallup WA with my friend from Longview WA. We had a great time! I personally never won anything but I did receive a wealth of knowledge and inspiration not to mention all the fun ladies I met and new friendships made. The projects we did were great and we got the CD-rom to go home to make more. I’m really looking forward to the next event! Thanks Eileen and Marie!! It was great meeting you!
Jane

Marie and I cover tons of embroidery challenges during our two-day, hands-on, team-sewing events: what to do when your fabric pops out of the hoop, stitching on terrycloth, vinyl, sheers, quilting with an embroidery machine, stitching multiples (and getting them to match!) are just a few of the 50 techniques we cover. Attendees use all of Designs in Machine Embroidery products – everything from Magna-Hoop Jumbo to Snap-Hoop to placement kits and learn how to set themselves up for success and navigate on the machine like a pro.

You’ll learn three ways to do continuous hooping and find out what methods works best for your machine and your project. You’ll meet PAL – and see how this helpful little tool can make hooping square a breeze. Treat yourself to two-days of embroidery fun and education – you’ll go home with a smile on your face and some newfound knowledge that you’ll be inspired to put into immediate action.

Why don’t you join us? We’ll be hitting the road and landing in a town near you! This weekend finds us in Fresno, CA at Authorized Sew & Vac. There’s still room – click here for more information. http://www.authorizedvacandsew.com/

We are so excited to head back to BSew Inn in Tulsa, OK. It’s been a couple of years since our last visit so we are very excited to share our new techniques and projects. Mary Hess at BSew Inn is bringing in only the top of the line machines for you to use during the event. You’ll pampered in the lush educational environment of BSew Inn.

http://www.bsewinn.com/home.php

After Tulsa, we head right to Pittsburgh – a first for the Stitching Sisters. Amy Baughman is hosting the two-day event at Cranberry Township, PA. Click here for more information on the Feb 10-11 event http://www.amybaughman.com/

After Pittsburgh, we’re taking some time off because I’m getting married! The nuptials take place March 24th and I’ll be back from my honeymoon in plenty of time for the Spring Stitching Sister events. We have three exciting locations this spring:

Rocky Mountain Sewing & Vacuum April 13-14

We can’t get enough of the Rocky Mountains! Join us for two-fun filled days – sure to be full of special door prizes if I know the crew at Rocky Mountain Sewing!
http://www.rockymountainsewing.com/

Daines Cotton Shops April 27-28

This is a first-time visit for the Stitching Sisters to Salt Lake City, UT. We can’t wait to connect with all the stitchers in the Salt Lake area! I know from Designs’ subscriber list that embroidery is alive and well in Utah!

http://www.thecottonshops.com/

Schiller’s Sewing Circle May 10-11

We’re heading to charming, scenic Mystic, CT. Since Marie and I grew up on the east coast we are really looking forward to teaching in Connecticut. This lovely seaside resort is definitely a vacation destination. Bring your hubby – there’s lots to explore and enjoy!
